Killaloe Diocese Mission Awareness

Killaloe_Diocese_Mission_Awareness Each year the Diocese welcomes speakers from a missionary society or congregation to promote their work throughout the Diocese.

This year it is the turn of the Missionary Society of St. Columban. Priests, Sisters and Lay Missionaries from the Society will visit every Parish in the Diocese over the course of the year.

The Missionary Society of St. Columban and the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of St Columban were founded by Fr. Edward Galvin and Fr. John Blowick. The Society takes its name from St Columban, Ireland's missionary to Europe in the 6th century. It was first known as the Maynoth Mission to China and was formally launched in 1918 as a missionary society of diocesan priests. The first Columbans went to China in 1920, to meet the challenges of its language and culture and to share the suffering of its poor.

There are presently over 600 Columban missionaries in the Society and they publish the Far East magazine to promote their work and support the missions. During their visit to your parish you will have the opportunity to subscribe to the Far East.

Two priests of the Killaloe Diocese, Frs. Des Hillery and Anthony Casey are just completing a period of five years working as Associate Missionaries with the Society of St. Columban in Peru.
