A great number of parishioners gathered in the Church of the Sacred Heart on Friday evening to pay tribute to Mr. Martin Scanlon who retired as Principal of the local National School last year.
Martin had served as a teacher in the school for 39 years spending the last 12 years as principal teacher. He was joined on Friday night by his wife Margaret
and family to mark this significant change in his life. Fr, Brendan Quinlivan was the principal celebrant at the Mass of Thanksgiving and was joined by Fr. Pat Sexton, the retired Parish Priest, who worked closely with Martin during his time in the Parish. A good will message from Bishop Kieran was read at the Mass and afterwards warm tributes were paid to Martin for his service by Tom Hanley, Chairman of the School Board of Management. Fr. Pat Sexton presented Martin with a gold watch as a small token of the communlty's esteem while Margaret received a bouquet of flowers. Martin himself spoke to the gathering and recalled his time as a pupil and as a teacher and as a principal, It was a wonderful evening that Martin shared with his family and friends.
