The Birth of an Airport Parish

Airport_Book_Insert The Parish of Shannon is Killaloe Diocese’s youngest parish.  The parish was part of Newmarket-on-Fergus until it was created by the late Bishop Michael Harty on Christmas Eve 1967. The Birth of an Airport Parish, published by Columba Press, tells the story of how the faith and its people developed around the birth of an airport and the town of Shannon.

The author, Diarmaid Ó Donnabháin, was asked by the parish to document its story and twelve years of research and interviews by Diarmaid will bear fruit when the book is published on Tuesday 16th December.  Diarmaid, a native of Cork, was appointed first Principal of St. Patrick’s Comprehensive School in Shannon in 1966 and has lived in Shannon ever since.

The book is well illustrated with pictures of the past that tell the story of how people came together from all over Ireland and different parts of the world to make Shannon their home and create their parish at a time when both Church and State were changing in a new Ireland.  The book would make an ideal gift and will be available in time for Christmas from the Parish Office in Shannon at a discounted price of €20.  To order your copy contact Shannon Parish Office on (061) 364133.
