The Island Roots of Europe

Aspire Archipelagoes, Sacred and Profane, of the Island Roots of Europe

The Clare Three Legged Stool Poets in conjunction with the Western Writers Centre are hosting a seminar next week on the Sacred and Profane Roots of the Islands of Europe. 3 events are open to the public:

1) An Opening Night in Kilfenora Cathedral with an address by Estonian Literature Nobel Laurate, Jan Kaplinski. 2) A Poetry Reading in Glor on Saturday October 21st at 3 p.m. and 3) A final concert in Ennis Cathedral on Saturday night, Oct. 21st, at 8 p.m. The seminar will explore two major strands:

A) The expansion of Christianity from Europe into the Western Islands and beyond - including the journeys of St Brendan.

B) The Norse expansion into Southern Europe down to islands of Southern Italy.

The seminar will reflect on how these two strands, one sacred and one secular helped shape European Civilization.

Poets and Musicians from Iceland, Norway, the Faroe Islands, the Shetland Islands, Ouessant (off the coast of Brittany), Corsica and Sardinia are coming to Clare for this very interesting seminar.

All events are open to the public and attendance is free.
