Vocations Sunday

The_Laying_on_of_Hands_by_Archbishop_OReilly The 4th Sunday in the season  of Easter is traditionally known as Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a day set aside in the Church to pray specially for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. During the recent Killaloe Diocesan pilgrimage to mark the centenary of the Marian apparitions in Fatima Bishop Fintan recorded a special message for Vocations Sunday.

On May 13th 1917 Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in Fatima Portugal and encouraged them to pray the rosary every day. As part of the centenary celebrations earlier this year Pope Francis blessed pilgrim statues that are travelling around the world. On March 24th the pilgrim statue visited Ennis Cathedral and the Diocese was consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Bishop Fintan is inviting us to use the occasion of the centenary of these apparitions as an opportunity to pray in a special way for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

While we are asked to pray every day for vocations, Bishop Fintan is asking us this year to connect in a special way with the powerful intercession of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Begining on May 13th (the day on which Pope Francis will canonise two of the children) we are invited to pray each day for vocations and to continue doing so at least until October 13th which marks the 100th Anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun.
