Pope Francis addressed newly-appointed bishops in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall on Friday. Among the attendance was our new Bishop-Elect, Fr. Fintan, as he prepares for his ordination next Sunday.  The Pope reminded them of the thrill of being loved in advance by God and exhorted them to ‘make mercy pastoral’.

The Diocese is inviting us to be part of a 9-day period of prayer prior to the ordination of Fr Fintan Monahan as new bishop of Killaloe. The nine days run from September 16th to 24th. We are asked to pray in a special way during these days asking God’s blessing and the outpouring of the gifts of the Holy Spirit on Fr Fintan and on our diocese at this time of transition.

Coat of Arms and Motto

Traditionally in the Church most bishops and the Pope have a personal Coat of Arms. Originally used to mark or seal documents they now serve to identify people and dioceses. They often reflect the story of a Bishop's ministry or express his hopes for the future. In preparation for his episcopal ordination, which will take place on September 25th, Bishop-Elect Fintan has prepared his personal Coat of Arms and Motto.

Pope Francis inaugurated the Holy Year of Mercy in the Vatican on Tuesday, December 8th, by opening the Holy Door in the atrium of the Basilica of St Peter’s.
