Emergency Appeal – Trócaire Collection for Turkey and Syria – Killaloe Diocese

Dear Colleague, Parishioner,

In view of the magnitude of the disaster in Turkey and Syria with the death toll well over 45,000 – I am appealing to parishes in the diocese to hold a second collection the weekend after next, the first Sunday of Lent, 25th and 26th of February to help with the Earthquake appeal.

Last year the appeal for Ukraine yielded over €80,000 in the early stages of Lent and it did not affect the regular Trócaire appeal, a great testament to the outstanding generosity of the people of the diocese.

I would appreciate it if parishes could advertise it in newsletters and media platforms this weekend and as soon as possible after the collection the following weekend to send to proceeds to Cathy Sheehan, our financial controller, for the emergency appeal and in order that it won’t get mixed up with the regular Trócaire Collection later in the Lenten season.

Please find a promotion poster, kind courtesy of Fr. Tom Ryan to help alert people to the project.

Details below from Trócaire on how the proceeds will be dispersed.

Many thanks for your kind attention to this.

Yours sincerely,

✠ Fintan Monahan

The earthquakes in Syria and Turkey on Monday 5th February have had a devastating impact on millions of people in both countries.

Trócaire is responding to this crisis through the Caritas Internationalis Network.

We have a longstanding relationship with Caritas Syria, whom we have supported in their humanitarian work throughout the war in Syria.

We have the capability to ensure that any funds raised in Ireland and channeled through Trócaire to the Caritas Internationalis response in Syria and Turkey will be managed appropriately to meet the needs of those most badly affected.

We are available to be a conduit for any funds raised by parishes and Dioceses in response to the earthquakes, therefore.

We remain very grateful also to all Dioceses and parishes for their support for our Lenten Appeal, which enables us to support people in crisis in many different countries globally.

With best wishes,
