To mark the occasion of the canonisation of Cardinal John Henry Newman in Rome by Pope Francis on October 13th a new book written by Bishop Fintan Monahan will be launched in the Canon O’Kennedy room of St Flannan’s College, Ennis on the memorial date of Blessed John Henry Newman, October 9th at 8.00 pm. There will be a staged reading of some aspects of the thought of the saint-to-be. The choir of students from St Flannan’s College will sing some of Newman’s hymns. Refreshments served. All welcome.
The book, a short introduction, to Newman is a most readable short text on different aspects of the life of Blessed John Henry Newman. It reflects on the nature of sainthood, the relevance of the new saint for today along with some aspects of the person, faith, spirituality, prayer, theology, literature, sayings and mottos of Newman.
There is an interesting section on Newman’s link with Ireland and the legacy of that in relation to Education, the founding of UCD and other issues, including a number of interesting Killaloe links.
It will be a useful resource for anyone interested in one of the great figures of the Church and literary world of the 19th century who has great relevance for people of faith today.
